Starting With Fitness

Welcome to my random musings on preparing for when bad things happen. Since I am painfully short on cash right now, I'm starting with something that doesn't require a lot of money...getting into shape. I've let myself grow fat, dumb and happy; that needs to change. The last thing I want to do is hurt myself or get burned out, so I'm starting slow and hoping to work myself into some serious exercise.

I've been following a workout routine from the book 8 Minutes in the Morning by Jorge Cruise. Every morning you perform four sets of twelve repetitions of two bodyweight or dumbbell exercises. For example, the first day I did the dumbbell bench press and the dumbbell bent over row. That might not sound like much, but it was enough to leave me a little sore. I've also been going on mile-long walks every day. Hopefully after a month of this routine, I'll feel ready for a little more demanding weight lifting routine. So far it has felt good to work my body a little harder than I've been used to; the key is to just keep working.

My second project is modifying my diet. I've gotten used to all sorts of prepackaged crap chock full of sugar, salt, and fat. My first step is to eliminate soda and sweets. I'm trying to substitute water and unsweetened iced tea for soda, but I do have sweet tooth so this is a challenge. I am doing a little better substituting fruit for sweets...I've always liked most fruit, so this is not as hard for some reason. Hopefully outing myself online like this will encourage me to exercise a little more will power in this area.
